  • 706 AD - Qianling Mausoleum Murals (China) - The earliest known visual depiction of Penjing appears in wall paintings inside Prince Zhanghuai's tomb, showing servants carrying potted miniature landscapes.
  • 1195 AD - Saigyo Monogatari Emaki Scrolls (Japan) - A famous handscroll illustration marks one of the earliest documentations of potted trees in Japan during the Heian/Kamakura transition.

  • 1603 AD - Tokugawa Shogunate Collection (Japan) - Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu establishes a massive personal collection; one of his Five-Needle Pines (Sandai-Shogun-no-Matsu) survives today as one of the oldest known bonsai.
  • 1900 AD - Paris Exposition Universelle (France) - Miniature potted trees displayed at the World's Fair introduce the Western world to Japanese bonsai art on an unprecedented global stage.
  • 1925 AD - Foundation of Omiya Bonsai Village (Japan) - Following the Great Kantō Earthquake, master bonsai growers relocate to Saitama to form the world-renowned center of bonsai culture.
  • 1976 AD - US Bicentennial Gift (Japan & USA) - Japan gifts 53 historic bonsai to the United States, including a 390-year-old Japanese White Pine that survived the Hiroshima atomic bomb, founding the National Bonsai Collection in Washington, D.C.
  • 1989 AD - First World Bonsai Convention (Omiya, Japan) - The inaugural World Bonsai Friendship Federation convention convenes, establishing a global network for bonsai masters, educators, and enthusiasts.
